Our Gear Review & Editorial Independence Policy

Real gear. Real conditions. Honest reviews.

Our promise

At The Local Trail, our loyalty belongs to our readers—not the companies whose products we review. Field Tested means real gear, real conditions, and honest reviews. We never promise favorable coverage in exchange for products, payment, advertising, or sponsorship.

Honesty comes first

We report strengths, weaknesses, limitations, and disappointing results. We do not exaggerate performance, conceal shortcomings, or recommend equipment simply because a company supports our publication. A sponsor may support our work, but cannot buy our opinion.

Vermont first, quality always

We prioritize products manufactured in Vermont, followed by New England, other American manufacturers, and exceptionally relevant international gear. Origin influences our coverage priorities, never our verdict. We distinguish made, designed, assembled, and merely sold in Vermont when evidence permits.

Real-world testing

We seek firsthand testing under relevant outdoor conditions. Each review will state how the product was obtained, where and how it was tested, the extent of testing, advantages, drawbacks, value, and suitable users. Limited testing is clearly labeled First Look; we never claim to have tested something we have not used.

Free samples and loans

We may accept evaluation samples or loans, but they never guarantee publication or a positive recommendation. We disclose whether gear was independently purchased, loaned, provided free, or discounted beyond generally available prices, along with other material relationships.

Advertising and affiliate links

Advertising, sponsorships, and affiliate commissions may support The Local Trail, but cannot influence conclusions or purchase recommendations. We clearly label sponsored content, disclose material relationships prominently, and never sell ratings, favorable reviews, or spots on recommended-product lists.

Our conclusions

Reviews generally end with Recommended, Recommended With Reservations, or Not Recommended, explaining the intended user, evidence, and limitations. We aim to answer: Would we spend our own money on this product again? Opinions reflect the specific testing described, not guarantees.

Safety and reliability

We report observed failures and credible safety concerns, distinguish facts from suspected causes, and seek technical clarification when appropriate. Reviews do not replace manufacturer instructions, recall notices, or professional safety inspections.

Corrections and manufacturer responses

Manufacturers may provide factual corrections or technical responses, but never approve, rewrite, or suppress independent reviews. We correct material errors and disclose significant changes in conclusions following new evidence or further testing.

Conflicts of interest

We disclose relevant financial interests, business relationships, employment, and other meaningful connections—including when coverage intersects with Cycle Craft Vermont. We may decline coverage if a conflict cannot be managed transparently.

Maker profiles are not endorsements

Made Close to Home stories may explore local manufacturers, founders, and craftsmanship. A profile is not a Field Tested recommendation. Local businesses receive fair attention, not preferential ratings.

Our commitment

We would rather lose a sponsor than lose readers’ trust. Our reputation is not for sale, and neither is our recommendation. The Local Trail — Adventure begins close to home. Policy established October 2026; updates will preserve independence and transparency.
