Autumn hillside path overlooking forested mountains at Boyce Hill Town Forest

Boyce Hill Town Forest: A Hidden Gem in Vermont’s Mad River Valley

Beautiful mountain views, peaceful woodland trails, and a remarkable conservation story make this Fayston destination worth discovering.

Sometimes the most rewarding outdoor adventures are also the simplest. They don’t require a strenuous mountain climb, expensive equipment, or an entire day set aside for exploration. Sometimes all it takes is a quiet trail, beautiful scenery, and the opportunity to disconnect from the demands of everyday life.

Boyce Hill Town Forest in Fayston, Vermont, is just such a place. Nestled in the Mad River Valley, this approximately 93-acre property offers open meadows, peaceful woodlands, and expansive mountain views. Its approachable trails make it an appealing destination for a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Behind the scenery lies an inspiring story about preserving something special for the community.

A Walk Worth Taking

On a beautiful late-October afternoon, Boyce Hill was showing off some of Vermont’s finest autumn colors. Golden grasses and vibrant red and orange foliage covered the open hillside, contrasting with the blue-gray silhouettes of distant mountains.

The walk toward the overlook followed a broad, gradually ascending trail, making the experience feel more like an enjoyable countryside ramble than a demanding mountain hike. The route is best described as easy to moderate, depending on fitness and comfort with uphill walking.

There is enough elevation gain to provide a little exercise, but the trail remains manageable for many people relatively new to hiking. On this visit, the route followed the main trail to the overlook before returning by way of a short spur that reconnected with the primary trail. It was a simple outing, but exceptionally rewarding. What made it memorable wasn’t the physical challenge; it was the scenery, peacefulness, and feeling of being surrounded by nature.

A View That Makes You Stop

As the trail emerges onto the open hillside, the landscape unfolds into a panorama of rolling hills, forested valleys, and distant mountain ridges. From the overlook, visitors can appreciate the Mad River Valley and surrounding Green Mountains. During autumn, colorful foliage, open meadows, and distant peaks create an especially memorable scene.

But the real appeal isn’t limited to the view itself. Without the distractions of busy roads or crowded destinations, Boyce Hill offers a chance to slow down, enjoy the fresh air, and appreciate the landscape. There is something restorative about standing on a hillside, looking toward the mountains, and realizing the afternoon doesn’t need to be filled with anything more complicated than this.

From Private Land to Community Treasure

Before becoming a town forest, Boyce Hill was privately owned and had been considered for residential development. Instead, landowner Christina Castegren donated approximately 93 acres to the Town of Fayston in 2019. Working with the Vermont Land Trust, the town established conservation protections to preserve natural resources and public access.

Today, its trails, views, and open spaces belong to the community. Boyce Hill was once working farmland, and traces of that history remain in stone walls, old apple trees, and other historic features. The open landscape is part of that legacy. Preserving it requires thoughtful stewardship that balances recreation with wildlife habitat, forest health, and historical character.

Places like Boyce Hill don’t remain accessible by accident. They exist because people recognize their value and make deliberate choices to protect them.

A Place to Explore at Your Own Pace

For someone beginning a hiking journey, the main trail offers a manageable introduction to Vermont’s hill country. Experienced hikers may appreciate a relaxed outing that doesn’t demand a major physical commitment. Families, photographers, and nature enthusiasts can all find something to enjoy.

The broader property also includes additional trails, a pond, and reminders of its agricultural past. But visitors don’t need to explore every corner to appreciate it. Sometimes the simple walk to the overlook is enough.

When Winter Arrives

Although autumn provides spectacular scenery, Boyce Hill also looks promising as a winter destination. Its broad main trail and open hillside suggest excellent possibilities for snowshoeing when sufficient snow covers the ground. Imagine snow-covered meadows, bare trees, and distant peaks in an entirely different atmosphere.

Winter conditions deserve respect: snow and ice can make even gentle trails more challenging, and appropriate traction or snowshoes may be necessary. Keep the parking area’s snowplow turnaround clear. Winter snowshoeing is a suggested future outing, rather than an activity experienced during this October visit.

The Beauty of Staying Close to Home

It’s easy to associate outdoor adventure with famous mountains and challenging climbs. Those experiences have their place, but they aren’t the only way to connect with nature. Boyce Hill shows how much a simple walk can offer: beautiful scenery, a peaceful atmosphere, and just enough adventure to make an outing memorable.

Perhaps most importantly, the forest represents a community’s decision to protect a remarkable piece of Vermont for everyone to enjoy. Sometimes adventure begins with a walk up a hillside—and a view that makes you glad you came.
